To upgrade the L400 BIOS without a floppy drive. 1.) Download vfd (Virtual Floppy Disk) program from Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vfd/) 2.) Unzip vfd to a folder. 3.) Double-click on vfdwin.exe in the folder. 4.) Select Driver tab and click on Start button. 5.) Select Drive0 tab. 6.) Set the Drive Letter to A and tick the checkbox to make it Persistent/Global. 7.) Click on the Open/Create button. Then click on the Create button. 8.) Then double-click on the EXE BIOS file from Dell. You'll want to download the A09L400.exe (A09 of the BIOS) or L400A06.exe (A06 of the BIOS). 9.) Then go back to vfd. 10.) Click on the Save button on the Drive0 tab. 11.) Type in the image filename to save to. L400_a06.img is a good filename to use. 12.) Download trial version of Nero Burning ROM. 13.) Choose CD-ROM (boot). 14.) Set the source of the boot image data to be an Image file and browse to the L400_a06.img file that was just saved. 15.) Burn. 16.) Insert in L400 CDROM drive and boot up. The BIOS update process will begin.
